Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that celebrates loved ones that are no longer living. Some people may think that Day of the Dead is a Halloween type event but it actually a very respectfull event. Also, all of the skeletons are not meant to be scary.

Take a closer look at the skeleton characters and you will see that they are often dancing, singing, playing music, and even eating! Often the Day of the Dead characters are dressed up wearing their favorite clothes or occupational outfits that they wore when they were alive.

Day of the Dead evnets now take place all over the world and in Mexico is it held on November 2nd. Historically families decorate grave sites of passed family members or friends with colorful flowers, handmade gifts, candles, and assorted cakes and candies. Sugar skulls are popular decorations made of a sugar paste which can them be painted and decorated. Some sugar skulls are highly detailed with the name of the dead on the forehead and some are given to children for them to decorate. Altars memorializing the dead are also popular to set up for Day of the Dead celebrations. In a home a Day of the Dead altar is set up using the items that were used and the favorites of the passed. Favorite foods, toys, crossed, pictures, even alcohol. The altar is used as a central location for friends and family to get together to tell stories about the dead. Some people wear shells or Day of the Dead beads on themselves so as they dance or move about they are said to wake up the dead to make it easier to talk to them. 

Many towns celebrate with Day of the Dead Parades parties. Community parades are typically held so that all people can celebrate and remember the passed loved ones. The History of Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is a two week long festival held every year in Bavaria, Germany. This year the official Oktoberfest dates are September 19 – October 4, 2009. Oktoberfest was originally a wedding party in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese. This wedding party lasted 7 days and included everything from dancing, beer drinking, and even a horse race. The event was so popular that they decided to make it an annual event. As time went on the Oktoberfest organizers decided to bump up the start date to September to take advantage of the milder September weather.
The current day Oktoberfest celebration has grown to accommadate over 6 million people per two week festival. The major Bavarian breweries construct giant temporary beer tents that serve food and beer and live music. The Bavarian flag uses the blue and white harlequin pattern that is the most common Oktoberfest decoration.
